Model lines are work plane-based elements that exist in 3D space and are visible in all views. They can be drawn straight or curved, either singly or in chains, or in the shape of a rectangle, circle, ellipse, or other polygon. In simple terms, a model line is an architectural feature that is two-dimensional in reality, but will still be displayed in a three-dimensional view. When viewing a Revit model on a computer screen, the thickness of elements is dynamic. That means elements will appear to be thicker when you are zoomed in and thiner when you are zoomed out.

One cannot use Revit’s Model Lines for this purpose because each Model Line needs to be associated with a Sketch Plane. With a Complex Toposurface, this approach can be extremely convoluted. A simpler approach is to use a linear element that is not tied to a Sketch Plane. This code and the idea to create these kind of model lines for debugging purposes is actually demonstrated by the Revit SDK sample Openings, in its module BoundingBox.cs, which implements the two methods NewSketchPlanePassLine () and NewModelLine (), upon which the methods defined above are based.

Lines are what we would term as ‘dumb modelling’. In fact I would go as far as to say that you might as well just jump back into 2D CAD if you prefer drawing with lines, arcs and circles in Revit. The smarter, modern way of technical detailing in Revit is to use objects. So the question is, how can we tag a line in Revit?
